Inspirating!! (Updated, March 2, 2006)
Below is a highlight of my poetry career it's humble beginning and it's progress so far my aim and mission is to use the spoken words and uplift people and if possible bring about a change in their thinking with seminars, poems, books and music. I want to empower minds and uplift people, "Change" my poem was written to me like a message but it's universal appeal has made me change it from a song into a poem . People need to change in this day and age, were wrong thinking and doing is seen as the way to go, the in thing as we Jamaicans would say, but we need to realize that our future will be a result of our thoughts and actions today and our today is a result of our past thoughts and actions. "Fools Don't Like Correction" is another message written for me by me which universally indicates a reluctance to change even though the right path is waiting.
My First 'Public' performance of a poem was the middle of 2004 at Jamaica Vibes Haining Road, Kingston Jamaica I had arrived with the intention of D,J'ing only, but by the time it was my time to performed I decided I was gonna try out a song I had written, Fools Don't Like Correction (to sing) in the form a poem. As it was a mixed show with musician and poets at the venue, it was a good chance for me to start inspiring, to my surprise I got a good response even better than the response for the two songs I DJ, even though they were all inspirational, but I noticed and realized that when I do the poem I get my message across more clearly and more attention is paid to what I am saying, being as how my mission is to inspire people but as I love music I really kept writing songs and thing, I write positive and uplifting unreligious songs with messages I can convert them to maximize my understanding and soothe myself from the mind.
That is until, while at work, I heard a temporary member of staff a poet named Gina Rey Forrest discussing a poetry show she was organizing I mentioned to her that I wrote poetry and music & laughed , she said no joke I should talk to her and be on the show in December, At lime key restaurant the first in a series of shows Writers In Fusion. After going through change mind difficulties like not getting my bike from the repairer then I had my bicycle fail me and I had to push my bicycle with the back wheel stuck from little below Up Park Camp gate to Swallowfield, Old Hope Road then I was left having to reach home to Grantspen by bus at almost 8:00, and incidentally just my luck, for the first in a long time. Then I had to go through a argumentative session with my baby mother I decided nothing was gonna stop me from performing on my first poetry show. Like how everytime I was suppose to perform on a stage show something happened that stop me from going, let me reach too late or someone fight me out of the picture I wasn't going to let the forces stop me or let me get so upset or negative. So I rushed home avoided the spirit breaking arguments and shouting of my babymother and called a taxi and decided anytime the taxi arrived I would leave no matter what then I read some inspiration literature have a shower and left. I arrived a few minutes after 8:30 but the show luckily hadn't started yet, phweeew I finally relaxed my mind ate something drank something until it was my time to perform.
The venue wasn't as packed as I expected but I decided that I would perform my best just the same I had came prepared to do two poems "Fools Don't Like Correction then "Changes" after doing the two and getting a large applause I stepped off the stage and to my surprise the people called for me to do one more I got an "Encore" I felt so good, the people loved it they appreciated my art I went back and turned one more of my songs there and then in a poem a song I wrote for my mother titled "Lose Me Mother" I got a very good response and left the stage again feeling good and very positive . I got a lot of compliments and someone from Stella Maris Foundation that is in my community of Grantspen came and took my contact saying my message would do good for Grantspen and that if anything was keeping she would invite me to give my message. I left feeling please although I had to walk home from Chelsea avenue to Grantspen I did so with a contended mind.
Christmas Party- pixie presents handing out I am there watching, having received nothing not being a part of all the laughter and exchange of gifts going on and not feeling satisfied with salary or treatment as a long standing member off staff. I as there practically not enjoying the party, which had no liquor except sorrel actually, when suddenly and unexpectedly Gina announce that I was going to do a poem and she was going to do one and announced how I had done well and that I was going to be performing January 13th on her show and that everyone should attend ( first I know I had another show) I was caught on the spot so I just did "changes" I got a overwhelming response, everyone exclaiming they didn't know I was so talented and I should follow up poetry and after compliments and talking Len Harmond the Husband of another of my co-worker announced that he will make a rhythm for me and my Boss telling me separately that she would talk to Len to produce me and thing. my art was really being appreciated.! My Christmas was suddenly merry.
Preparing for the second show at lime Key Restaurant I decided to go back to Jamaica Vibes and do a warm up performance of the one I would do I attended the rehearsal on the Sunday and they said yeah I would be on I performed the three I had been working on and performing I got a very good response after I came off the stage I got compliments and felt positive that my message was being appreciated I was approached by a Edgar Lewis who request that I perform on his poetry show at Weekendz 25 January!!
January 13th - perform at Writers in Fusion Lime Key was told to do two poems I went do the two to flashing cameras and applause and the silence of a attentive, appreciative crowd. After coming off I was greeted and complimented two gentleman from Rootz fm came and told me my performance was good ,that like how I see I had the audience captured I should have done one more piece and that I should seek to push out myself and seek shows and do the works, inspirating people he also gave me a message said I should "OWN THE STAGE" when I am performing I will remember that. They then proceeded to invited me to do a interview with him on Rootz FM by Mahoo drive and to come prepared to do my poems live on the radio!!
Jan 25 - performed at weekendz, good performance was well received by audience and for the first time I actually performed for a few people from my community who was in attendance also the promoters of Jamaica vibes poetry show and everyone complimented me and I was told by more than one stranger that it was a good performance and I should follow up poetry and keep inspirating. Edgar will link me up back I left the venue almost immediately feeling overwhelmed with joy and feelings of progress.

In "PURE CLASS" a publication in the Sunday Herald, Jan 30 2005 by Nicola Cunningham who wrote "Writers In Fusion" "paying homage to the power and passion of the written word was the whole idea behind the January 13th Writers in Fusion at Lime Key restaurant Chelsea Ave. led by poet Gina Rey Forrest writer's in fusion celebrated the writer's creativity.......... she then went on to give short descriptions of the different acts writing about me that ..... "Another poet Charlie was also on point as he did "Changes" and "Fools Don't Like Correction" while Gleaner reporter Ingrid Riley spoke of the journey to find one's voice........"
Got second Call from edgar Lewis on Monday March 9 requesting me to perform at Weekendz nightclub constant spring road the following day! Had two tickets for poetry concert at uwi for international Women's Day. maneged to attend poem concert and then leave uwi and perform 1 1/2 hour later than i was suppose to to the approval of my babymother Alicia White. She witnessed me perform for the first time, got good response from the audience and conversated with zimbo about a link his new show on cable station Music + and i should link him up.
Auditioned for Tastee Talent concert on Saturday March 6 for the first audition of the year and the first time i am entering a poem into a competition, ( i had tried for the same audition before with music but wasn't able to get to semifinals, but getting valuable lessons) i got a call i have been selected for semi finals i will be performing on the 31st March 2005 at the outdoor theatre Crossroads.
I have been prompted by the almighty to start putting up messages quotes and reminders I write in my community in places were people who needs inspiration can be inspirated, I will forget all doubts and start inspirating and empowering if this is the way god want me to do I am ready to deliver the Almighty’s messages.
Well i know that everyone must be wondering what had happened to me at tastee talent concert, well i was so angry i had to cool off before i finally posted any comments. I got set back, that's all i'll call it i will not elaborate. Two mistakes were made and i did not make any i got called on wrongfully as a dj who's a fan of bounty when in fact i was gonna do a dub poem in memory of my mother(i did give them all my correct info) to top it off i was the only contestant out of 25 to be NOT backed by the band, and i was the ONLY contestant who had a original rythm built personally by me and a friend of mine name fros vibes, yet i had to spontaneously do a acapella after reheasring perfectly up until the day before and even hearing it testing out earlierby the band. yet i went on performed and got a big applause.
Conclusion i will never enter another talent competition for the rest of my life.
Now i am not giving up, it's just that i resolved.
To create and not compete, to motivate and not try to beat.

LSX told me good, it was a great performance and that I am a real youth. –. Also, Pain exclaimed. “Well put together, your poetry is filled with uplifting words. It’s not just the pattern or style I like. Someone can read it on paper and still love the words because it’s well put together."
